Door Number 1 -- Cheap and "Easy"

To understand door number 1, there are some things you need to know about the business of website creation.

  • The money comes from hosting Google text ads on your site
  • It takes a lot of traffic to make much money that way
  • Traffic simply boils down to good placement in search results
  • The most important factor in search engine placement is SIZE!
That last one is the "kicker". Its what makes the difference between good sites and successful sites. You can put together a really useful and enjoyable site with just a couple dozen pages...but nobody, and I mean NOBODY is ever going to see it. Why? Because when somebody searches for that topic in Google or MSN Search or Ask?, one of the biggest factors determining the site's ranking in the results is the size of the site.

You might be thinking "a couple dozen pages sounds like a pretty big site to me!", and you would be right, were it not for the fact that search engines so richly reward size. That fact alone makes all of the really big sites on the Web rise to the top of the search engine results, and hides the smaller sites on page 2 or 222.

When you were thinking that a couple dozen pages was a lot, it's probably because you were thinking about how much work it would be to build a couple dozen pages. The truth is though, that the successful sites (the ones that make money with Google ads), are often 200, 300, sometimes THOUSANDS of pages long. How long do you suppose it would take you to build a 300 page site? The truth is, for most people the answer is "forever", because most people run out of enthusiasm before they get to 50.

There are, however, two kinds of people who can build thirty to fifty pages, and wind up right smack-dab at the top of the first page of Google results. What kind of people are these? Well, one of them is "Door number 1" people, and the other is people who are selected by SuperSites, like "About.com" to build one small part of their website.

Try this experiment. Go to Google and search for "Weight loss". When I did it, Google found 84,300,000 websites that I might find interesting. About.com has a roughly 50 page "sub-site" devoted to weight loss at their weightloss.about.com Address. Guess where that little dinky site ranks for this hotly contested topic of weight loss? It's at number 2, right behind WebMD.com, another "super site". That little 50 page site went up against 84 million other hopefulls...and won. How? Its simple, weightloss.about.com is small, but about.com is HUGE! In total it has thousands of pages, and that counts for something at Google and the other search engines.

So, what does this have to do with "Door Number 1 People"? To put it in the simplest terms possible, as a door number 1 site author, you will be building a reasonable number of pages (less than 50), as part of a much larger site (typically around 400 pages per topic). And that topic will be just one of many topics all at the same "domain" (just like About.com has both weightloss.about.com and shoes.about.com and hundreds of other topics all at "about.com".)
